Authors from Haywire Books join Real Fiction Radio to discuss their writing careers and experiences with small publishers.


Jon Sealy is the author of The Whiskey Baron (Hub City Press, 2014) and The Edge of America (Haywire Books, 2019). An upstate South Carolina native, he has a degree in English from the College of Charleston and an MFA in fiction writing from Purdue University. His short fiction has appeared in The Normal School, PANK, and The Sun, among other venues, and his nonfiction has appeared in The Rumpus, The Millions, and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He currently is a freelance writer and the publisher of Haywire Books.

Patricia Henley’s first novel, Hummingbird House, was a finalist for The National Book Award and The New Yorker Fiction Prize. In November 2019 Haywire Books published a 20th anniversary edition of Hummingbird House.

Mark Powell has been called the "best Appalachian novelist of his generation" by Ron Rash. He is the author of six novels, including Firebird (Haywire Books, 2020), Small Treasons (Simon & Schuster, 2017), and The Sheltering (Story River, 2014). Powell has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Breadloaf and Sewanee Writers' Conferences, and in 2014 was a Fulbright Fellow to Slovakia. In his new novel, Firebird, author Mark Powell delves into the 2014 Ukraine-Russia conflict.
